NEW ORLEANS - The No. 18/20 Auburn women's golf team carded a 14-over 302 Sunday in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship, placing the Tigers into a tie for 11th with Purdue and Texas A&M. Senior Karlin Beck led the Tigers in the first round, ranking in a tie for 11th with an even-par 72.
Hosted by Tulane University, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship is a three-day, 72-hole stroke play event being held at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. The par-72 course will play at 6,105 yards for the tournament.
"We played a lot better than our score reflected today," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We had a lot of good looks and we played with some strong wind, so we feel good about where we are. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow, but we are ready to come out and take a shot at it."
Beck, a native of Pike Road, Ala., carded four birdies and two bogeys in her first nine holes, making the turn at 2-under-par. She finished the round with seven pars and two bogeys to come in at even-par. She finished the day in a four-way tie for 11th, six strokes out of the lead.
"Karlin had a great round today and really came through for us," said Evans. "We're looking forward to a total team effort tomorrow to get back in the mix here."
Duke's Laetitia Beck is in the lead with a 6-under 66 while LSU's Jacqueline Hedwall and Megan McChrystal are in a tie for second at 3-under 69. Vanderbilt's Megan Grehan, Florida's Isabelle Lendl and Tulane's Ashley McKenney round out the top five in a tie for fourth with 2-under 70s.
Also in the top 25 for Auburn was senior Cydney Clanton, placing in a tie for 24th with a 2-over 74. Even par after 10 holes, Clanton carded three bogeys in her next four holes. She rebounded for a birdie on her 16th hole to get back to 2-over for the day.
Sophomore Carlie Yadloczky followed two strokes behind Clanton at 4-over 76, tying for 47th. Freshman Marta Sanz and junior Haley Wilson rounded out the Auburn lineup tied for 73rd with 8-over 80s.
Junior Patricia Sanz, competing as an individual in the tournament, finished the first round in a tie for 33rd after carding a 3-over 75.
In the team race, host Tulane is in the lead with an even-par 288. Duke is in second with a 2-over 290 while LSU is in third with a 3-over 291. Arizona State is in fourth with a 5-over 293 while Vanderbilt rounds out the top five with a 6-over 294.
Action will resume at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate with tee times beginning at 8 a.m., Monday off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees. Auburn will go off in the first set of tee times off the No. 1 tee, ranging from 8 - 8:36 a.m. The Tigers will play alongside Purdue and Tennessee.
