Women's Golf In Ninth After First Round In San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Auburn senior Cydney Clanton carded six birdies Sunday at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn, placing her in a tie for third after the first round with a 1-under 71. As a team, Auburn is in ninth place in the 17-team field after carding a 17-over 305.

Being played for the first time, the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played on the Championship Golf Course at Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort & Spa. The par 72 course is playing at 6,336 yards for the tournament.

"We are close, we are getting there and making the right moves to get ready to play well," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "It was windy and cold this afternoon, but we played through it and I was proud of the way we handled the conditions in such a tough environment."

Clanton led the way with her 1-under 71 and is in a three-way tie for third with Stephanie Kono of UCLA and Amy Simanton of California-Davis. Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro is in the lead with a 3-under 69 while Purdue's Laura Gonzalez is in second with a 2-under 70.

Just three strokes behind Clanton is freshman Marta Sanz, who is playing as an individual, in a tie for 19th at 2-uver 74. Sanz carded three birdies on the day, but was set back by three bogeys and a double.

Second on the team is junior Haley Wilson in a tie for 34th with a 4-over 76. One stroke behind her is Patricia Sanz in a tie for 43rd at 5-over 77.

Rounding out the Auburn lineup was sophomore Carlie Yadloczky and senior Karlin Beck, in a tie for 72nd and 80th, respectively. Yadloczky finished the day with a 9-over 81 while Beck came in at 11-over 83.

In the team race, UCLA is in the elad with a 5-over 293, followed by in-state rival California-Davis at 6-over 294. Purdue is in third with a 7-over 295 while Arizona State is in fourth with a 9-over 297. Southern California rounds out the top five with an 11-over 299.

Second round tee times will get started at 10 a.m. CT, Monday at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn. Auburn will go off the No. 1 tee, playing alongside Arizona and UNLV. Fans can follow all the action with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
