SAN DIEGO - Playing in rainy and windy conditions, even fighting through some hail, four members of the Auburn women's golf team carded rounds in the 70s Monday, helping the Tigers to a second-round 307 at the Battle at Rancho Bernardo. Auburn moved up one spot into eighth place with a 36-over 612 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Being played for the first time, the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played on the Championship Golf Course at Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Resort & Spa. The par 72 course is playing at 6,336 yards for the tournament.
"It was a really tough day out there today," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "You always hear about the perfect weather in San Diego and you see the pictures and post cards, but that is not what we are getting at all, it's been tough."
Despite the tough conditions, Evans saw some improvement in her team and what was nearly a big round for Haley Wilson.
"I am seeing some good things out of everyone, but we are not there yet," said Evans. "Haley had a very good round going, but took a triple-bogey on the very last hole. Those are the things we have to continue to work through."
Cydney Clanton, Patricia Sanz and Carlie Yadloczky all recorded 4-over 76s in the second round. Clanton leads the team in a tie for fifth with a 3-over 147, followed by Sanz in a tie for 32nd with a 9-over 153. Yadloczky moved up almost 20 places and is in a tie for 55th with a 13-over 157.
Wilson ended up taking a 7-over 79 on the day, finishing in a tie for 46th with an 11-over 155. Senior Karlin Beck rounded out the Auburn lineup with a 10-over 82, coming in tied for 83rd with a 21-over 165.
Freshman Marta Sanz is competing in the event as an individual. She posted a second-round 78 and is tied for 25th with an 8-over 152.
Individually, Purdue's Laura Gonzalez is in the lead with a 3-under 141, followed by UNLV's Therese Koelbaek in second with a 2-under 142. Southern California's Lizette Salas is in third at even-par 144 while Arizona State's Giulia Molinaro is in fourth with a 1-over 145. Clanton joins Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister, Southern California's Sophia Popov and California-Davis' Amy Simanton in a tie for fifth at 3-over 147.
