Women's Golf Tied For Sixth At Liz Murphey Collegiate

April 1, 2011

ATHENS, Ga. - Playing in its final regular-season tournament of the season, the No. 20/21 Auburn women's golf team is in a four-way tie for sixth after the first round at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The Tigers carded a 6-over 294 in the first round and are 10 strokes behind leader Purdue.

The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played on the University of Georgia Golf Course. The par 72 course is playing at 6,335 yards for the tournament. The Classic is using a "best ball" team format, with the low four individual scores from each hole comprising the team's counting score as the day progresses. Traditionally, the low four rounds at the end of the day are added together to determine the team score.

"It is a fun format this week, it's nice to change things up a little bit," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "It took a little while for us to get used to it, but overall it was a lot of fun having the team play together and we have ourselves in a good position after the first round."

Junior Haley Wilson led the Tigers in the first round, carding a 1-over 73 on the day. Posting a consistent round, Wilson tallied 15 pars with a birdie and two bogeys - one of which came on her last hole of the day.

"Haley played really well today," said Evans. "She did a good job of getting out there and pacing the team and leading us through. She was coming in right at even-par before that bogey on her last hole, but she played some nice golf today."

Just four strokes behind Wilson are junior Patricia Sanz and sophomore Carlie Yadloczky with 5-over 77s, tying for 42nd. Senior Karlin Beck and freshman Marta Sanz are in a tie for 59th with 6-over 78s.

Also competing in the tournament is freshman Diana Fernandez. She finished the day in a tie for 93rd with a 9-over 81.

In the team race, defending NCAA champion Purdue is in the lead at 4-undef 284, followed by Alabama in second at 2-under 286. Duke and host Georgia are in a tie for third with 3-over 291s while Florida State rounds out the top five with a 5-over 293. Auburn is in a tie with Arkansas, Virginia and Wake Forest with 6-over 294s.

Individually, Duke's Aleja Cangrejo and Florida State's Hannah Thomson are in a tie for first with 2-under 70s. Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta is in third with a 1-under 71 while Hayley Clinning (Kennesaw State), Laura Gonzalez (Purdue), Casey Grice (North Carolina) and Emily Tubert (Arkansas) are in a tie for fourth with even-par 72s.

Action in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is set to continue at 8:30 a.m. CT, Saturday with a shotgun start second round. Auburn will start the day on the No. 7 tee. Fans can follow all the action with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
