ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - The eighth-ranked Auburn men's golf team (292) finished Friday's opening round of the 2011 SEC Championships tied for fifth at 12-over par at Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course in St. Simon's Island, Ga.

No. 5 Florida (285) holds the team lead at 5-over followed by Tennessee (286) and Arkansas (286) tied for second at 6-over. No. 3 Alabama (291) is in fourth followed by Auburn, No. 15 Georgia and No. 11 LSU in a three-way tie.

Freshman Niclas Carlson (71) leads the Tigers in a tie for 8th at 1-over, followed by junior Cory Gilmer (72) tied for 15th at 2-over. Sophomore Michael Hebert (74) finished the day in 27th, Blayne Barber (75) in 38th and junior Kyle Kopsick (76) in 41st.

The 2011 SEC Championships mark the first appearence for Carlsson, Gilmer, Hebert and Barber at Sea Island.

"It was a windy day and we played well for nine holes overall," said Clinard. "We need to hit better wedge shots, make more putts and have some fun the next two days. We are still within striking distance and we're looking forward to the challenge."

After opening his round with three-consecutive bogeys, Carlsson maintained his composure and fired four-straight pars followed by a pair of birdies 17 and 18 to make the turn at 1-over. The Enebyberg, Sweden, product closed his round with a birdie on 2 and a bogey on 7.

Hebert got off to an even shakier start, carding six bogeys in-a-row between holes 11 and 16. However, the Florida State transfer bounced back, finishing out his round with three birdies to one bogey and turning in his card at four-over.

Gilmer and Kopsick led Auburn at even par through the back nine, but their fates would differ as the day progressed. Gilmer opened the front nine shooting a six on the par-4, No. 2, but plowed ahead with seven-straight pars to finish the day at 2-over. Kopsick hit a tough spot on holes 1-4, coming in at six-over par.

Kentucky (293) is in eighth at 13-over followed by South Carolina (294), Vanderbilt (299), Mississippi State (299) and Ole Miss (303).

LSU's John Peterson (68) holds the individual lead at two-under followed by a three-way tie for second at one-under.

The Tigers will tee off Saturday at 7:00 a.m. CST with Alabama and Georgia. Complete tee times and tournament information can be accessed via www.SECSports.com.
