2011 Bluegrass Invitational Tournament Central
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The sixth-ranked Auburn men's golf team (287) completed the opening 18 holes of the Bluegrass Invitational in the lead Saturday at the University Club in Lexington, Ky.
Play was halted midway through the second round due to darkness after a two-hour lightning delay earlier in the day.
Sophomore Dominic Bozzelli (67) carded his lowest collegiate round Saturday, finishing the day in the individual lead. The Central Florida transfer finished two strokes ahead of Kentucky's Chase Parker (69) and Michigan State's Dan Ellis (69).
"It was a long day with the weather delay and having to get back out there with almost no warmup," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We've got to make more putts and do better with our scoring irons. If we can get better with our scoring irons and distance control, I think we're in good shape."
Freshman Dan Stringfellow (72) is tied for ninth followed by junior John Stembridge (73) is tied for 17th followed by sophomore Jackson Beindorf (75) and junior Cory Gilmer (77) tied for 35th and 55th, respectively.
The Tigers started the day with a 7:30 a.m. CST shotgun start, teeing off No. 2. Bozzelli got things rolling, draining a 40-footer on the par-3, third. It was one of two 40-footers and one of five putts over 20 feet for the Pittsford, N.Y., native in Saturday action.
Stringfellow then bounced back from a rocky start, draining a sand wedge for eagle on the par-5, seventh to move the Tigers to 3-under.
Once making the turn, the skies darkened and a light rain moved into the area. Bozzelli again sank a long range effort, this time a downhill 30-footer on the par-4, 10th. Just moments later, lightning crashed on the horizon and the two-hour delay commenced.
Bozzelli would reach as low as 7-under on the day after another birdie on 14.
With the weather delay over, powerful winds swept over the course to wreak havoc on the field. Although the Tigers dropped seven strokes while closing out the round, they maintained a three-stroke lead over tournament host Kentucky (290).
Marshall (291) and Toledo (291) are tied for third followed by Valparaiso (292), Michigan State (294), Ohio (298), Morehead State (299), Bowling Green (299), Akron (300), Dayton (301), Western Carolina (301), Western Kentucky (304), Utah Valley (307), Loyola-Chicago (307), Eastern Kentucky (312), Cincinnati (313) and Lipscomb (321).
The Tigers will resume play on No. 14 Sunday at 7:30 a.m. CST. Complete tournament results and information can be accessed vis www.UKAthletics.com.
