Martin, Tenn. - The Auburn equestrian team rode into the University of Tennessee at Martin on Sunday and came away with a commanding 13-5 win to open the fall season.
"Well, I've thought our practices have been good at home and it seems as though that was supported today," Head Coach Greg Williams said. "These girls came in with a lot of energy and they never let up. We are off to a great start."
The Tigers won all four events and also earned MVP honors in each against the Skyhawks. Auburn started strong in claiming equitation, 4-1. Freshman Jennifer Delman led the charge claiming MVP of equitation defeating Elizabeth Gay, 87-77.
Grace Socha scored an 84 to beat Hunter Ralston's score of 74, Anna Becker beat Kaylan Herbst, 87-81 and junior Lindsay Portela beat Kara Bergenty, 80-77.
Maggie McAlary earned MVP honors by defeating Brittany Kasprack, 87-74 helping her team claim a 6-3 win in equitation over fences. In the family reunion, Kara Bergenty of UT-Martin beat Auburn's Coryn Bergenty, 75-79 and Christina Lin beat Caroline Cramer, 85-80.
The Tigers also won horsemanship, 4-1. Freshman Katsy Leeman earned MVP by defeating Heidi Grimm, 76-68.5. Danielle Long defeated Michelle Chullock, 76-74.5, Chelsea Zilner beat Laurel Ellzey, 76.5-70.5 and Katie Buff edged Candice Fulcher, 73.5-70.5.
With a score of 7-2, Auburn took reining, led by MVP Indy Roper who beat Michelle Chullock, 75.5-70.5. Helping the cause were Stephanie Rucci, who beat Carly Lamb, 73-68.5, and Cheyenne Cracraft, who defeated Amy Guenther, 71.5-65.5.
"We are not only pleased with wins in both huntseat and western, but with sweeping all four MVPs as well," Williams said.
The Tigers return home to host TCU on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 10:00 a.m. (CT) at the Auburn University Horse Center.
