Baton Rouge, La. -- Rueben Randle finished with 106 yards receiving and had two first half touchdown receptions of 46 and 42 yards while Kenny Hilliard rushed for two touchdowns to lead No. 1 LSU to a 45-10 victory over No. 19 Auburn in Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
With the help of two Auburn penalties, LSU (8-0, 5-0 SEC) took the opening kickoff and drove 76 yards in eight plays, taking a 7-0 lead on a Hilliard 9-yard touchdown run.
Cody Parkey drilled a 42-yard field goal to bring Auburn to within 7-3 with 1:26 left in the first quarter. LSU cornerback Ron Brooks made a phenomenal play breaking up a 21-yard Kiehl Frazier to Travante Stallworth pass in the end zone that would have tied the game.
A penalty cost Auburn (5-3, 3-2 SEC) again on LSU's second touchdown drive. Jordan Jefferson threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Randle to give the Bayou Bengals a 14-3 lead with five minutes left in the half. It was Jefferson's only pass of the first half.
On the play before, Jefferson fumbled in the backfield and it would have set up a third and long, but Kenneth Carter was flagged for a facemask penalty on Jefferson after the fumble occurred. Instead, LSU had an automatic first down and capitalized on the deep strike.
"It was all the classic things you do on the road to lose," said Auburn head coach Gene Chizik. "That was a good football team. You hope to play much better than we did. It got out of hand for us, and they just outplayed us in every phase of the game. Auburn people deserve better than they saw today."
Another penalty on third down, this time pass interference on Chris Davis on a pass that was nearly picked off by Demetruce McNeal breaking in front of the receiver, led to LSU's third score, a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jarrett Lee to Randle with 40 seconds before halftime.
LSU went into the locker room leading 21-3 as LSU outgained Auburn 213 yards to 113. Auburn also had six first half penalties for 46 yards.
LSU added to its lead on its first drive of the second half as Lee threw his second touchdown pass of the game, a 10-yarder to Russell Shepard for a 28-3 lead with 9:51 left in the third. Tre Mason fumbled the ensuing kickoff after a big hit by LSU's Eric Reid, and LSU took over at the Auburn 22. Hilliard cashed in on a 1-yard dive for a touchdown to put the Tigers ahead 35-3 at the 8:12 mark.
Brooks made his second big play of the game for LSU, intercepting a Clint Moseley pass on the second play after LSU's previous score and returning it 28 yards for a touchdown to give LSU a 42-3 lead. Drew Alleman closed out the scoring for LSU with a 36-yard field goal that made it 45-3 with 13:56 left in the game.
"It was a good LSU team," said defensive tackle Jeffrey Whitaker. "We didn't play our best ball today. The only thing we can do is lace up the boots and keep going. We have a season ahead of us and keep going hard and keep fighting."
Onterio McCalebb scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to complete a 10-play, 86-yard drive as Auburn made it 45-10 LSU with 2:22 remaining.
Moseley finished the game 12 of 20 for 145 yards and one interception. It was the 15th most yards by an Auburn quarterback in his first collegiate start. Michael Dyer rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries while DeAngelo Benton had two receptions for 42 yards and McCalebb three catches for 38 yards.
LSU outgained Auburn 393 yards to 248. Lee completed 14 of 20 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns while Jefferson was 2 of 3 for 54 yards and a touchdown. Michael Ford rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries.
