KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 2/18 Auburn women's golf team recorded its third top-three finish of the season, taking third at the Mercedes Benz SEC/PAC 10 Challenge. With a low-round for the tournament yesterday, the Tigers held on to finish third in the 23-team field with a 296-286-297--879.
Auburn finished with two players in the top-10 in Marta Sanz and Carlie Yadloczky. Marta Sanz carded a final-round 69 to finish the tournament with a 74-71-69--214, tying for third and finishing just three strokes behind tournament champion Stephanie Meadow of Alabama. Yadloczky tied for seventh with a steady 72-73-72--217 for the tournament, carding eight birdies and an eagle.
"Marta and Carlie both had really strong tournaments," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "They continued to play solid and consistent and that is really all you can ask for."
Hosted by Tennessee, the SEC/PAC-12 Challenge was a 54-hole stroke play tournament played at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. The par-72 course played at 6,447 yards for the tournament.
A matchup of the members of the Southeastern and Pacific-12 Conferences, the tournament featured 15 teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
Rounding out the tournament for the Tigers were seniors Haley Wilson and Patricia Sanz along with freshman Victoria Trapani. Patricia Sanz finished the tournament 77-68-79--224 to tie for 44th, while Wilson carded a 78-74-78--230 to tie for 70th. Trapani tied for 53rd with rounds of 73-75-78--226 for the weekend.
"This was a difficult course and it really tested you mentally," said Evans. "We lost some ground in the beginning, but ended up being able to hold our ground at third."
Alabama took the team title with 1-over 865, followed by UCLA at 5-over 869. Auburn finished third (879) with Tennessee and Southern California finishing one stroke behind in fourth with 16-over 880s. Vanderbilt took sixth at 23-over 887 followed by Georgia at seventh with 24-over 888. Florida placed eighth at 29-over 893 with Arizona in ninth at 30-over 894 while Arizona State and Washington finished tied for 10th overall with 31-over 895s.
Individually, tournament winner Alabama's Stephanie Meadow held on to first with an even-par 72 in the final round, finishing the tournament with a 5-under 211. Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton took second at 3-under 213, followed by Auburn's Marta Sanz and Tennessee's Kaitlyn Rohrback in a tie for third with 2-under 214s. Rounding out the top-5 was UCLA's Erynne Lee at 1-under 215.
In the Conference Challenge portion of the tournament, the SEC came out on top with a tournament average of 896.1. The PAC-12 finished with a 898.8.
The Tigers return to the course Oct. 28-30 in The Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. for their final tournament for the fall season.
