BIRMINGHAM - In its only two matches of the day, members of the Auburn women's tennis team suffered a pair of narrow losses in action at the ITA/USTA Southern Regional hosted by Samford University.
Freshman Jen Pfeifler's solid run in the main singles draw ended on Sunday in the quarterfinals with a loss to Ole Miss' Kristi Boxx. The freshman won the first set 6-4, but dropped the next two sets and the match, 6-4 and 6-0.
Auburn's only other action on Sunday featured junior Plamena Kurteva in the singles consolation bracket. Kurteva lost a tight first set to Troy's Karoline Grymel 7-6, but rebounded to take the second set 6-2. The junior from Bulgaria was unable to pick up the win though as she fell 10-5 in the final set and was eliminated.
Overall, Auburn picked up 13 match wins over the course of three days of play. The tournament concludes on Monday in Birmingham with the championship round.
Auburn women's tennis is in action next from November 4-6 when the team wraps up its fall schedule at the Cougar Fall Draw hosted by the University of Houston.
