CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 16 Auburn women's golf team got off to a good start Friday in the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational, finishing the day in fourth place at 1-under 287.

Hosted by the University of North Carolina, the Tar Heel Invitational is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played on the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. The par-72 course is playing at 6,285 yards for the tournament.

"We started out really strong for the day and then got into a lull in the middle at some of the hardest holes, but overall I thought we finished it strong," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "Hopefully tomorrow the girls will feel more comfortable with the course and we can refine our strategy."

Sophomore Marta Sanz led the group, finishing the day tied for fourth, carding a career best 3-under 69. Junior Carlie Yadloczky carded three birdies on the back nine, finishing with an even-par 72 that places her in a tie for 16th.

"Marta was really on her game today, she came prepared and had a really nice round," said Evans. "I couldn't have asked for more from her. Carlie had a few tough breaks, but really made it up in the end and played extremely well, too."

Freshman Victoria Trapani and Senior Haley Wilson are tied for 26th with 1-over 73s while freshman Nicole Quinn rounded out the squad in a tie for 43rd with a 2-over 74.

Alabama leads after the first round, carding a 7-under 281, followed by LSU and Wake Forest in a tie for second with 4-under 284s. Auburn is in fourth at 1-under 287 while South Carolina rounds out the top five with a 1-over 289.

Individually, South Carolina's Katie Burnett, LSU's Madelene Sagstrom and Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods are tied for the lead with 4-under 68s. Auburn's Sanz is tied with Alabama's Hannah Coller and Brooke Pancake, Wake Forest's Olafia Kristinsdottir, Michigan State's Caroline Powers and North Carolina State's Augusta James are tied for fourth with 3-under 69s.

"It is a really good course, everything we knew it would be," said Evans. "Tomorrow we just have to keep it up and keep playing smart and aggressively."
