STATESBORO, Ga. - The ninth-ranked Auburn men's golf team (279) completed the opening round of the 2011 Chris Schenkel Invitational in first place at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
The fifth-ranked Florida Gators (282) are in second place, three strokes behind Auburn, followed by No. 12 LSU (287) and No. 19 Virginia (288).
The Tigers boast four scoring golfers in the top 13 led by sophomore Blayne Barber (68) in second place, one stroke behind leader Bank Vongvanij of Florida. Freshman Niclas Carlsson (69) is in a six-way tie for third followed by juniors Kyle Kopsick (71) and Cory Gilmer (71) tied for 13th. Sophomore Michael Hebert (77) is tied for 63rd.
Competing individually, sophomore Dominic Bozzelli (73) is tied for 25th.
"We got off to a decent start," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "The guys stayed patient and we took what the golf course would give us. The experience we've gained all year will help as the season goes on, especially in the post season.
"The greens are really good and smooth today. They firmed up as the day went on. The sun came out and it got pretty hot out there. It became more of a challenge as the round kept going, but our guys seemed to play better."
Tennessee (289) is in fifth Notre Dame (291), North Florida (291), NC State (292), North Carolina (292), host Georgia Southern (297), Minnesota (301), Vanderbilt (302), Mississippi State (303), Ole Miss (304) and Kentucky (306).
