ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - The eighth-ranked Auburn men's golf team (294-586) completed round two of the 2011 SEC Championships Saturday in seventh place at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simon's Island, Ga.
Sophomore Blayne Barber (70-145) led the Tigers on Saturday with an even-par second round and is currently tied for 17th with freshman Niclas Carlsson (74-145) at five-over par. Sophomore Michael Hebert (74-148) and junior Cory Gilmer (76-148) are tied for 30th at 8-over followed by junior Kyle Kopsick (78-154) in 50th.
"Conditions were rough again here at Sea Island," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We haven't played our best the last two days but tomorrow will be a new challenge. If we can make some putts and play disciplined golf we should do well."
Barber started the day with six consecutive pars before picking up a bogey on No. 7, but then responded with back-to-back birdies on 9 and 10. The Lake City, Fla., native remained at one-under with a bogey on 14 and a birdie on 15. However, he was not able to come home under par, dropping a stroke to No.18 which allowed only four birdies on the day.
Barber was one of only eight players in the field of 60 to shoot par or better on another windy day on St. Simon's Island.
On a day where birdies were hard to find for all teams, No. 15 was the most generous for Auburn who picked up birdies from Barber, Carlsson and Gilmer on the 565-yard, par-5. No. 18 was the costliest for the Tigers, claiming seven strokes as the team closed out the second round. Only Carlsson was able to find par on the 470-yard, par-4.
No. 5 Florida (282-567) will enter Sunday's final round in the lead at seven-over, followed by Tennessee (287-573), No. 3 Alabama (285-576), No. 15 Georgia (288-580), No. 13 Arkansas (294-580), No. 11 LSU (291-583), Auburn, South Carolina (295-589), Kentucky (297-590), Ole Miss (291-594), Vandy (308-607) and Mississippi State (310-609).
LSU's John Peterson (71-139) holds the individual lead at one-under, followed by a three-way tie for second at even par.
The Tigers are set to go off the back nine for Sunday's final 18 holes, teeing off at 7:00 a.m. CST with South Carolina and Kentucky. Complete tournament information and tee times can be found at www.SECSports.com.
