AUBURN - Auburn led most of the game, but a late bucket and free throws from Arkansas gave the Razorbacks (19-5, 8-4 SEC) the 51-48 win over the Tigers (11-15, 3-10 SEC) Sunday at Auburn Arena. Camille Glymph came off the bench to lead the Tigers with 10 points.
A buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Camille Glymph gave Auburn a 28-25 lead at halftime, but the Tigers were never able to pull away from Arkansas. Auburn's biggest lead was four points in the game that saw 12 ties and 11 lead changes.
The Tigers led by three with 2:19 left in the game, but a Razorback free throw and a layup on back-to-back possessions tied the game up with 1:20 left. Arkansas then forced a turnover and capitalized to take a 49-47 lead with 32 seconds left.
Sophomore Tyrese Tanner was able to draw an Arkansas foul on the next possession, but connected on just one of the two free throws. Arkansas hits both free throws in the final seconds to take the 51-48 win.
"It was a very disappointing loss today," said Auburn head coach Nell Fortner. "We had some defensive breakdowns towards the end of the game, and that's what cost us the game. We didn't do well at the free throw line, but we still gave ourselves that chance to win and it was a disappointing loss."
Defense drove the Tigers in the first half as Auburn forced 14 Razorback turnovers, turning them into 20 points on the other end. Arkansas then committed just five turnovers in the second half with Auburn scoring just two points off them.
"I thought there were some things with our defense that went better for us this game, but we had some fundamental breakdowns within that defense that were not good," said Fortner.
Parrisha Simmons earned a start in the game and led the Tiger defensive effort with three steals. In all, seven Tigers tallied at least one steal in the game.
Sophomore Jassany Williams notched her first start since November and made good on it, scoring nine points along with a team-high six rebounds and a steal. Tanner and Morgan Jennings added eight points each for Auburn.
Sarah Watkins led Arkansas with 14 points and eight rebounds. Included in her 14 points was the go-ahead basket with 32 seconds left in the game. Ashley Daniels also scored in double figures with 10 while Lyndsay Harris added nine.
Auburn's bench, which has stepped up all season, was solid again Sunday as the Tiger bench out-scored Arkansas' 24-12. Glymph, Auburn's leading scorer, came off the bench, marking the 13th time this season the Tigers' leading scorer was a bench player.
Auburn will take the week off this week and return to action at 2 p.m., Sunday at LSU (17-6, 7-5 SEC). The Bayou Bengals downed Alabama 51-46 Sunday in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The game between Auburn and LSU will air live on Cox Sports Television.
