ORLANDO, Fla. -- Four Tigers finished the second round of the Central Florida Challenge in the top-10 as the No. 3 Auburn women's golf team moved into a tie for first with Baylor at 7-under 569. The Tigers carded a second-round 284 to pull even with the Bears and take a seven-stroke lead over the rest of the competition.
Hosted by the University of Central Florida, the Central Florida Challenge is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played at the Red Tail Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. The par 72 course is playing at 6,374 yards for the tournament.
Carding the low score for the round was sophomore Diana Fernandez with a 5-under 67, a mark that ties her for seventh all-time at Auburn in single-round scores. She enters Tuesday's final round in a tie for third with Tulane's Maribel Lopez Porras and Miami's Leticia Ras-Anderica after carding rounds of 75-67--142.
"Diana really had a breakthrough today with college golf," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "I'm excited to see how she does tomorrow."
At the top of the leaderboard for the Tigers is freshman Victoria Trapani, one stroke from the lead with 68-72--140. At 4-under-par for the tournament, she is just one stroke behind leader Hayley Davis of Baylor.
Sophomore Marta Sanz and senior Haley Wilson are in a tie for seventh with even-par 144s. Sanz carded a 1-over 73 on the day while Wilson came in at even-par for the second day in a row. Junior Carlie Yadloczky rounded out the Auburn lineup, posting a 78 to finish the day in a tie for 61st at 8-over 152.
Playing as an individual, senior Patricia Sanz carded two birdies and an eagle to post a 2-under 70 on the day. She is tied for 13th after 36 holes with a 1-over 145.
"We played steady as a team, but have a lot more to do tomorrow to get the job done," Evans said. "We are right in there, but we have to come back out and keep working tomorrow to finish this off."
Auburn and Baylor are tied at first with 7-under 569s, followed by Tulane in third at an even-par 576. Host Central Florida is in fourth at 1-over 577 with Augusta State in fifth with a 3-over 579.
Tuesday's final round is set to go off with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Auburn will go off Nos. 1-3 with Baylor and Tulane. Fans can follow along with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
