Dane Opel homered twice and drove in four runs for Missouri as the Auburn baseball team dropped the first game of its Sunday doubleheader, 6-4, at Plainsman Park. The loss evened both team's records at 1-1 on the young season.
Slade Smith (0-1) took the loss for Auburn, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings while Jeff Emens (1-0) got the win for Missouri out of the bullpen.
Jake Walsh earned his first save of the season for Missouri.
Five different hitters had multiple hits for Auburn, which finished the game with 13 hits and six walks but stranded 16 runners on base.
Cullen Wacker drove in two runs with a pinch-hit double in the fourth that narrowed the gap to 4-3 but that was as close as Auburn would get after trailing 4-0 after Missouri batted in the third.
Down 6-3 in the ninth, Blake Austin drove in a run with a double to left. Auburn then loaded the bases when Bobby Andrews was hit by a pitch but that was all for Auburn as Walsh finished the game off with a strike out.
