TUCSON, Ariz. - The Auburn baseball team dropped the middle game of its three-game series at No. 8 Arizona, 15-4, in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. The loss drops Auburn under .500 on the season at 3-4 while Arizona moves to 5-1.
Arizona starting pitcher Konner Wade (1-0) fanned 10 in 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win while Auburn starter Slade Smith (0-2) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Alex Mejia was one of three Arizona hitters to finish the game with three hits as he finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. In total the top three in the Arizona lineup were a combined 8-for-14 with eight runs scored and five RBIs, collecting two doubles, a triple and the home run between them.
Ryan Tella, Cullen Wacker and Caleb Bowen each had two hits for Auburn, which finished the game with eight hits and four walks and left eight on base.
Jay Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to seven games with a first-inning single and finished the game 1-for-4 with a walk while Creede Simpson was hitless in four trips to the plate to end his hitting streak at 10 games dating to last season.
Kody Ortman hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the ninth inning.
