Javelin Title Highlights Opening Weekend for Track

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Auburn's 2012 outdoor track season got underway on Saturday at the Alabama Relays and one Tiger wasted little time earning his first title of the season.

In the javelin, Tyler Kennedy took advantage of his first opportunity to compete in 2012 and picked up his first event title of the season. Competing for the first time in 2012, Kennedy recorded a throw of 199 feet, 8 inches (60.85m) to place first nearly three feet further than second-place Brian Zimmerman from Cincinnati.

Teammate Michael Dekich placed fourth in the event with a throw of 175 feet, 7 inches (53.51m).

Victoria Bernardo got her season and collegiate career started in the women's javelin with an eighth-place finish in Tuscaloosa. The freshman from Gladstone, N.J. finished eighth in her first Auburn action with a throw of 112 feet (34.14m).

Senior Michael DeHaven wrapped up Auburn's action on Saturday night in the 100 meter invitational. The Georgia-native placed second and was the top-ranked collegian with his mark of 10.44 seconds.

Auburn's full squad will compete for the first time next weekend at the Texas Relays and the North Florida Invitational.
