The No. 3 Auburn equestrian team fell to No. 6 South Carolina, 12-6, Friday in the opening meet of the Southern Equestrian Championships. The Tigers fell to 8-5 while the Gamecocks improved to 8-5.
"We rode well, but not our best," Auburn head coach Greg Williams said. "It was going to take more than that to beat a team like South Carolina today. I think most of the girls are going to rebound well from this and be ready for nationals."
Auburn fell, 6-3, in both the Hunt Seat and Western arenas. South Carolina took Equitation over Fences and Reining, 4-1, while the teams tied, 2-2, in Equitation on the Flat and Horsemanship.
In Equitation over Fences, the Tigers' lone point came from Jennifer Waxman who defeated MVP Carolyn Curcio, 173-169.
In Equitation on the Flat, Anna Becker defeated Colvin Hedgepeth, 164-154, and Jennifer Delman beat Kelsey Hart, 150-0.
In Horsemanship, Danielle Long defeated Katie Kopf, 143-141.5, while Katsy Leeman beat Maggie Fortune, 145.5-142.5.
In Reining, 2011-12 All-American Indy Roper defeated Cody McMillion, 140.5-136.5.
Auburn returns to action April 12-14 from Waco, Texas, at the 2012 National Collegiate Equestrian Championships. The top-seeded Hunt Seat team and the No. 4 seed Western team each received first-round byes and await their respective opponents in the second round of competition.
