ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 5 Auburn women's golf team carded a 9-over-par 297 Friday in the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, finishing the day in 11th. Sophomore Marta Sanz and senior Haley Wilson led the Tigers on the day, carding 1-over 73s.
Hosted by the University of Georgia, the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The par 72 course is playing at 6,335 yards for the tournament. The 18-team field features five teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
"We did some good things out there today, we just could not string them all together and complete a full round," said Auburn women's golf coach Kim Evans. "We were not very consistent and could not get in a good flow. I feel good about some things that we did, we just have to get back to playing Auburn golf."
Sanz struggled to get any consistency Friday, carding six bogeys with five birdies along with seven pars to finish at 1-over 73. Wilson, however, made a big move late in her round to get to 73. She was 3-over through 15 holes, but carded birdies on two of her final three holes to finish the day tied 25th.
Freshman Victoria Trapani was third on the team with a 3-over 75. She was 1-over heading into the final hole, but a double-bogey dropped her into a tie for 41st.
Junior Carlie Yadloczky finished the day tied for 51st with a 4-over 76 while senior Patricia Sanz rounded out the Auburn lineup tied for 81st with an 8-over 80.
In the team race, Alabama leads with a 10-under 278, followed by host Georgia with a 4-under 284. South Carolina is third with a 3-under 285, followed by Florida with a 2-under 286 and Virginia at 1-under 287.
Individually, Alabama's Jennifer Kirby and Brooke Pancake have the top two spots with a 66 and 68, respectively. Three players are tied for third with 3-under 69s.
The tournament will continue with tee times from 8 - 10:40 a.m. CT, Saturday off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees.
