No. 5 Women's Golf Moves Up To 8th At Liz Murphey Collegiate

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 5 Auburn women's golf team carded a 3-over 291 Saturday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, moving up three places in the standings to eighth with a 13-over 289 heading into Sunday's final round. Sophomore Marta Sanz posted a team-low 71 to move into a tie for 14th at even-par 144.

Hosted by the University of Georgia, the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic is a 54-hole stroke play tournament being played at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. The par 72 course is playing at 6,335 yards for the tournament. The 18-team field features five teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

"We played a lot better today, the scores don't show it, but we played a lot better," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We left a few shots out there and when you add them up, that is a four- or five-stroke difference. We are still working, but I saw a lot of improvement today."

Marta Sanz played a steady round, carding 15 pars on the day. She had just one bogey and was 1-over with four holes left to play, but the sophomore from Madrid, Spain tallied birdies on two of her final four holes to come in at 1-under 71. She enters the final round in a six-way tie for 14th with an even-par 144.

Also making moves Saturday was junior Carlie Yadloczky with her even-par 72. She moved up 22 places in the standings to put herself in a tie for 29th at 4-over 148. One stroke ahead of Yadloczky is senior Haley Wilson, who came in with a 2-over 74 on Saturday to tie for 26th at 3-over 147.

Freshman Victoria Trapani matched her first-round 75 with another in the second and is currently in a tie for 41st with an 8-over 150. Senior Patricia Sanz rounds out the Auburn lineup in a tie for 71st. She carded a 4-over 76 on Saturday for a 12-over 156 on the tournament.

Holding the lead heading into the final round is Alabama with an 11-under 565. Host Georgia is in second with a 3-under 573 while South Carolina is in third with a 1-over 577. Purdue is in fourth with a 6-over 582 while Virginia and Florida are tied for fifth with 8-over 584s.

Individually, Alabama's Jennifer Kirby is in the lead with a 6-under 138. Laura Gonzalez (Purdue) and Marta Silva Zamora (Georgia) are tied for second with 5-under 139s. Katie Burnett (South Carolina), Brooke Pancake (Alabama) and Meredith Swanson (South Carolina) are all tied for fourth with 4-under 140s.

"We have our work cut out for us, but I saw a lot of good things today," said Evans. "We know what we have to do and we have one more shot to do it tomorrow."

The tournament will conclude with an 8 a.m. CT, Sunday shotgun start. Auburn will start on Nos. 7-9, playing alongside Michigan State and Notre Dame. Fans can follow along with live stats at www.GolfStat.com.
