AUBURN - Members of the Auburn track and field team set multiple PRs on Saturday in the final day of action at the 2012 Tiger Track Classic as several track marks fell.
"I feel really good because for the most part this is our first meet of the year," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "We were fortunate enough to have good weather today. What I saw today was a lot of kids competing hard. We had a lot of good times today. We got several athletes who qualified for the first round of the National Championships.
"Stephen Saenz did a great job in the hammer throw yesterday. Kai Selvon ran very well today as did Keenan Brock in the 100m dash. Maya Pressley did a great job in the high jump with six feet. She is one of the top leaders in the country with that. All in all, I am pretty pleased. This gets us off to a good start in outdoors. We have a lot momentum coming off this weekend, so we should be feeling pretty good when we head to Miami next week."
A trio of Tigers finished in the top six in the women's 100 meters. V'Alonee Robinson was third in 11.63 seconds, CeCe Williams was fourth in 11.67 seconds and Ashley Cruder was sixth in 11.72 seconds. Robinson's time was a new personal-best mark.
In the men's 100 meters, sophomore Keenan Brock came in first place with a time of 10.24 while senior Michael DeHaven finished fifth at 10.48.
In the women's 200 meters, former Tiger Sheniqua Ferguson recorded the world's fastest time this year at 22.64. Sophomore V'Alonee Robinson set a personal best at 24.13.
Kai Selvon took home the event title in her first 400 meter race of her career. The junior from Trinidad and Tobago finished in 54 seconds, narrowly ahead of Charlotte's T'Sheila Mungo (54.08).
In the men's 400 meters, Spencer Ferguson set a new personal-best time with his mark of 47.38 seconds. He finished in fifth place. Former world champion Manteo Mitchell placed first with a world-leading time of 45.25 seconds.
Sophomore DJ Smith finished first in the high jump at 7'1.75" (2.18m). The mark ties for his highest in 2012 (indoor and outdoor).
Stephen Saenz placed third in the discus with a long throw of 170'3" (51.90m). Marcus Popenfoose was sixth with a mark of 165'6" (50.45m). In the men's shot put, Popenfoose won the event with a throw of 57'5.5".
Freshman Chason Farnell recorded a personal best on the pole vault, jumping 14' 7.25".
Ireland's Mark Christie broke the track record in the men's 3000m by nine seconds after finishing 8:00.41. Sophomore Samuel Mueller finished with a personal best 8:15.95 and in third place. With a throw of 207' 9" in the women's discus, Anna Thurmond set a facility record by more than five feet.
Auburn is in action next at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by the University of Miami on April 14.
