CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 6/7 Auburn women's golf team finished sixth in the final round of the Cougar Classic at 6-over for the tournament, carding rounds of 288-288-294--870. Junior Marta Sanz led the Tigers with her first top-10 finish of the season, tying for sixth.
"We have a lot of work to do," said Auburn head coach Kim Evans. "We wanted to come out and get stronger on the last day, but we let a few get away from us. It was a good tournament for us to start with, though, and gives us a good idea of where we are as a team."
Hosted by the College of Charleston, the Cougar Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament played at the Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C. The par 72 course played at 6.219 yards, and 13 of the 24 teams participating in the tournament are ranked in the top 25.
Sanz, who was tied for first after the first round, finished the final round at 1-over 73 and tied for sixth, carding two birdies for the day. For the tournament, she was 67-73-73--213.
"Marta had a great tournament and we are really happy with how she played," said Evans. "This was a tough tournament field with more than 120 players in it, so finishing in the top 10 was a good start for Marta."
Senior Carlie Yadlocky, junior Diana Fernandez and sophomore Victoria Trapani all finished the tournament tied for 30th with 3-over-par 219s. Yadloczky and Fernandez each carded three birdies while Trapani carded one in the final round of play. Yadloczky finished with 71-75-73--219, Fernandez with 77-79-72--219 and Trapani with 73-70-76--219.
Sophomore Nicole Quinn finished the tournament at 17-over 233 following her best round of the tournament. Quinn had a single birdie on the day to finish the final round at 4-over 76 and a tie for 104th with 80-77-26--233.
Florida finished the tournament in first at 12-over 852, followed by Duke in second carding a 6-under 858. Southern California placed third with a 1-under 863, with Vanderbilt in fourth at even-par 864. Georgia came in fifth after carding a 3-over 867.
Individually, Florida's Camilla Hedberg held on to her first place lead to finish at 13-under 203 with Duke's Lindy Duncan in second at 9-under 207. Tennessee's Erica Popson and Vanderbilt's Lauren Stratton tied for third after carding 5-under 211s, and Florida's Isabelle Lendl finished in fifth with a 4-under 212. Sanz finished in a four-way tie for sixth.
"We saw some good things from the team as a whole in this tournament, and that was good to see," said Evans. "But, now we are ready to get back home and start working toward the Fall Preview at Georgia."
The Tigers return to action Oct. 5-7 at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
