AUBURN - Hasina Muhammad scored a career-high 21 points with seven rebounds and Blanche Alverson added 14 points as Auburn women's basketball defeated Alabama A&M 93-44 on Sunday afternoon in Auburn Arena.
"What we wanted to do today was not just stand out there and launch threes," Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. "We only took six threes. Our percentage from the 3-point line was absolutely horrible, so we wanted to get in a little closer and attack the basket a little bit more, and I thought we did a better job today of executing our offense and getting the best shot. Not just the first shot, but getting the best shot which increases your percentage."
The Tigers (3-1) did just that as they shot 59.1 percent (39-of-66) from the floor, a season-best mark.
Three-point plays by both Muhammad and Tyrese Tanner gave Auburn the early advantage. A layup by Muhammad with 12:39 left made it 18-7 in favor of the Tigers.
Auburn opened its lead out to 31-11 on the back of a 16-4 run that was capped by four-straight by Pascale West. The senior from LaGrange, Ga. finished the game with a career-best six points.
Muhammad gave Auburn its largest first half lead of 24 points on a jumper with 3:18 remaining before the break.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 20-3 run over the first seven minutes of play to ice the game. Two at the line by Peyton Davis pushed Auburn's lead to 50, 85-35, with 5:23 remaining in the contest.
Auburn held its largest lead of 53 points with 2:15 remaining. The Tigers out-scored Alabama A&M 44-18 in the second half and scored 34 points off 23 turnovers in the game.
Alyssa Strickland scored 15 points to lead the Bulldogs (1-2). Courtney Strain tied her career high with 12 points, while Davis had nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Chadarryl Clay scored seven points and tallied five of Auburn's season-high 27 assists.
Auburn is in action next on November 23 in Boulder, Colo. against San Diego State as part of the 26th annual Omni Hotels Classic.
