No. 6 Auburn, Freshman Jake Mondy Win at The McLaughlin

Sept. 16, 2012

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The No. 6 Auburn men's golf team captured its ninth victory under head coach Nick Clinard after shooting a 10-under 830 at The McLaughlin at the historic Bethpage State Park. Auburn defeated Louisville by 11 strokes.

"I am extremely proud of the team for earning a huge win today," Clinard said. "We played well and it was nice to see the bounce in their step. Our focus now turns towards our next event at Olympia Fields at the end of the month. We will be ready and excited to compete in a few weeks."

Redshirt freshman Jake Mondy, in just his first collegiate tournament, took the individual crown, edging out senior Michael Hebert by two strokes. The Blacksburg, Va., native becomes the ninth Tiger to win a tournament under Clinard.

"Jake's win was very special as it was his first college tournament after redshirting last season, and I know how hard he has worked to get to this point," Clinard continued. "He is very coachable, a big-time player and is going to have an extraordinary career at Auburn."

The two Tigers were tied for the lead heading into the final round, but Mondy fired a 3-under 67 to finish at 8-under while Hebert carded a 1-under 69.

"Michael played well too, and it was a tight battle between him and Jake that went down the final two holes," Clinard said. "It was competitive and fun to watch."

Senior Dominic Bozzelli finished tied for seventh after shooting an even-par 210 for the tournament. The finish marks Bozzelli's sixth top-10 finish of his career.

Senior David Zickler captured his third top-20 finish of his career, finishing tied for 15th at 4-over. Junior Niclas Carlsson finished 62nd at 14-over.

The Tigers will return to action on September 30 - October 2 for the Olympia Fields Invitational in Chicago.
