PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Auburn women's golf team finished the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate tied for 11th, after carding a 10-over-par 294. Freshman Clara Baena led the Tigers in the first round with a 1-over 72.
Hosted by Stanford University, the Stanford Intercollegiate is a 54-hole tournament being played at the Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. The par-71 course plays at 6,130 yards for the tournament. The event features 16 teams from around the country, including 10 teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
"Today was a tough day," said associate head coach Andrew Pratt. "Our scores don't really show how the girls played today, but we played pretty solid for the most part today. We had two holes that killed us and that was tough to overcome."
With her 1-over 72, Baena finished the first round in a tie for 22nd. Sophomore Jamie Yun was right behind her with a 2-over 73, finishing the day tied for 35th.
Senior Diana Fernandez ended the first round of competition tied for 47th, after carding a 3-over 74. Fellow senior Marta Sanz carded five birdies on the day with a 4-over-par 75. She ended the day tied for 56th.
Junior Victoria Trapani shot a 8-over-par 78 in the first round to close out the Auburn lineup. She enters the second round of competition tied for 73rd.
Southern California is in the lead after carding an 8-under-par 276. Washington followed in second with a 2-under 282. Stanford and Oregon ended the day tied for 3rd at 1-under-par 283. Pepperdine finished in fifth, after carding a 1-over 285.
Individually, Sophia Popov of Southern California is in first with a 5-under-par 66. Tying for second place, Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford and Charlotte Thomas of Washington carded 3-under 68s. Seven players are tied for fourth at 2-under 69.
"I look forward to coming out tomorrow and putting a good number up on the board," said Pratt. "We are still in this thing. Hopefully we can clean up the mistakes and have a good team round tomorrow."
Play will continue Saturday with tee times from the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at 10:30 a.m. CT. Auburn will play with UC Davis and San Jose State, going off No. 10 from 10:30 - 11:06 a.m. CT. Fans can follow along with live stats at Golfstat.com.
