AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's basketball team (10-5, 1-1 SEC) fell to Vanderbilt (13-3, 2-1 SEC) 75-64 Thursday night at the Auburn Arena. The Tigers were led in scoring by senior Hasina Muhammad with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Tra'Cee Tanner with 16 points.
"I think it was Auburn giving itself trouble," said Auburn head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "I didn't think we were confident when we got the ball and we shot rushed shots inside."
The Tigers opened the game with the first four points, but Vanderbilt responded with 22-2 run in the first half. The Tigers fought back, bringing the Commodores lead down to two, Vanderbilt pushed back and lead by 13 at the half.
Auburn's struggles continued in the second half as the Commodores built their lead to as much as 17 and kept it in double figures most of the half.
The Tigers made up some ground in the final minutes, cutting a 12-point lead to as few as seven, but time ran out with Auburn taking the 74-65 home loss.
"They shot 43 percent from the field, 47 from the three-point line and 83 from the free throw line," Williams-Flournoy said. "That's Vanderbilt."
The Commodores were lead in scoring by senior Christina Foggie with 26 points. Jasmine Lister added 12 points and 10 assists.
"I thought a few times we lost Foggie, so we gave her some open looks which gave her some confidence," said Williams-Flournoy. "Jasmine Lister, she's just tough. She has a great penetration, she has a great hesitation. We just did not do a very good job of defending either one of them."
Also finishing in double figures behind Muhammad and Tanner was senior Peyton Davis with 11 points. Muhammad totaled a team-high four blocks while Tyrese Tanner and Cabriana Capers led the team with three steals each.
Auburn lost despite forcing 22 Vanderbilt turnovers, tallying 13 steals. The Tigers were only able to convert those into 11 points off turnovers while the Commodores turned 19 Tiger turnovers into 28 points.
The Tigers are set to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks Sunday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Auburn Arena with the game airing live on SportSouth.
