COLLEGE STATION, Texas. - The Auburn men's track and field team finished eighth while the women's team placed 11th at the 2014 SEC Indoor Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium at Texas A&M. The men finished with 34.33 points, while the women finished with 25, 16 points higher than last year's total.
In the men's 5000m, Auburn scored 13 points as junior Ty McCormack finished in third at 14:01.42, while Griffin Jaworski (14:20.81) and Samuel Mueller (14:21.81) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Mueller's time was a personal best, besting his previous time by nearly eight seconds.
Senior Niklas Buhner and junior Kane Grimster gave Auburn six points as Buhner came in fourth at 4:08.00, just ahead of Grimster, who finished eighth at 4:08.74. Reigning SEC champion Stephen Saenz earned two points with a seventh place finish in the shot put with a throw of 61-2.75/18.66m.
"I'm certainly not pleased with where we finished as a team, but we had a lot of good things happen this weekend," Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. "We knew coming in it was going to be a very competitive meet. That said, we had a lot of bright spots from a lot of good young talent that we have on the squad. It was such a tough meet that five points were the difference between 3-4 places. We left some points out there in some areas on the men's side and missed some opportunities, but we also had some people that stepped it up."
Junior Samantha Scarlett and freshman Ebony Morrison scored six points for the women's side as Scarlett posted a career-best 8.21 to finish fourth while Morrison placed eighth at 8.38.
Freshman Marshay Ryan earned five points as she finished fourth in the triple jump. In the last round of the event, Ryan claimed a personal best jump with a distance of 43-5.25/13.24m.
Senior Tori Nwadiogbu gave Auburn two points in the women's weight throw with a personal best 63-0.25/19.21m. Senior V'Alonee Robinson added to Auburn's total with an eight place finish in the 60 meter at 7.46.
"I'm pleased with our effort, but we're going to stay hungry and keep grinding," Spry said. "I'm confident we're going to regroup and get things back where we need to be. I feel good about what I saw in this young team, the direction we're headed and what we will look like in the future."
The SEC Indoor Championship will air as part of a 90-minute show on ESPNU on Monday, March 10, beginning at 6:30 pm CT.
