Auburn softball can't hold off LSU in SEC opener

AUBURN, Ala. -- Clint Myers' first SEC game didn't go as planned, but the Auburn softball coach says it can be a learning experience.

LSU used a late comeback for a 4-1 win in the league opener for both teams.

"I told them what we learned from this game will be evident in the next performance, so if you were a little nervous, if you were a little scared, then the first one is out of the way," Myers said.

They're SEC veterans now.

"We have to be the player we think we can be, and the player we definitely want to be: That's calm, relaxed and with the ability to execute."

McKenzie Kilpatrick's homer in the second stood up for a 1-0 Auburn through the first five innings. But LSU scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh for the win. Lexi Davis had been dominant until then.

"She missed location in the sixth and they took advantage. But she pitched very well," Myers said. "The key things are not so much what she did, but what we didn't do. You have second and third with nobody out and you don't score? You're not going to win many games when that happens."

That happened to Auburn in the fifth. The Tigers had only two hits, but had other opportunities with six walks. Auburn left eight on base. LSU left four.

Still, Auburn will take a 17-4-1 record into Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Jane B. Moore field. LSU improved to 16-6. Sunday's finale is also at 1.
