AUBURN, Ala. -- Coach Clint Myers says he was proud of Auburn's comeback from a seven-run deficit to tie Missouri.
"We didn't quit. We just didn't take it to the next level," he said.
Missouri beat Auburn 8-7 Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field after blowing a seven-run second-inning lead by scoring the decisive run in the sixth inning. The comeback, then loss, was a new twist, but it was the same frustrating outcome for an Auburn team that has lost six straight SEC games, all by one or two runs.
Missouri jumped on Auburn early, mostly thanks to two Mackenzie Sykes' homers and her six RBIs. But Auburn battled back with four in the fourth, benefitting from three straight bases-loaded walks, and tied it on an Emily Carosone three-run homer in the fifth.
"We've got to finish it," Myers said. "But we had our opportunities. Good teams know how to capitalize. We haven't quite gotten there yet. We're moving in that direction. Coming back after being down seven is a pretty good indication."
Auburn fell to 31-11-1 overall and 6-8 in the Southeastern Conference. Missouri improved to 31-10 and 8-6 in the league. The teams will wrap up their weekend series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Myers, an old hand at this, says he couldn't remember such a run of tough losses, though Auburn surely tried to end the streak with the comeback.
"It was good enough to score seven. It wasn't good enough to score eight," Myers said.
Carosone said she was proud that Auburn was able to stay "in the ball game and keeping our heads up. We knew what we had to do...we just waited too long.
"The streak of losing by one run has got to stop. We're trying to figure out, and we will figure it out. A lot of teams come back at the end, and that's what we've got to do."
Carosone led Auburn with four RBIs. Kasey Cooper, Branndi Melero and Morgan Estell had one each. Sykes went 3-for-4 and had those six RBIs for Missouri.
