PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Auburn relay team of Samantha Scarlett, Sashel Brown, V'alonee Robinson and Ebony Morrison claimed the shuttle hurdles Championship of America title on Friday with a time of 54.96 at the Penn Relays at the historic Franklin Field in Philadelphia. The win marks the first Penn Relay title for Auburn since 2012, when the Tigers won the men's 4x100 meter relay.
"Today was a very good day against some of the best competition in the country," head coach Ralph Spry said. "I'm proud of the way we performed, especially the women's shuttle hurdle relay winning the Championship of America and Marshay Ryan who had a huge leap to finish second in the triple jump. As a team we had several strong performances and were able to get some relays and individuals to advance to the finals tomorrow, which is very impressive considering the competition at the meet."
Freshman Marshay Ryan, a Pennsylvania native, placed second in the triple jump with a personal best distance of 43-0.25/ 13.11m. Ryan becomes the fourth-best performer in Auburn history with the 12th best performance in the event. Ryan's mark is the ninth longest in the nation heading into the weekend, and first among freshman nationally.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Scarlett, SheKara Martin, Halle Robinson and Morrison finished sixth in the finals at 44.69, while Scarlett advanced to the women's 100m hurdles finals after qualifying with the eighth-fastest time at 13.55. The men's 4x100 meter relay team of Keenan Brock, Khalil Henderson, Michael Cheeks and Teray Smith qualified for Saturday's final with the fifth-fastest time at 40.18.
Action at the Penn Relays begins at 12:45 CT on Saturday with the men's 4x100 relay, while the women's shot put is slated to begin at 1:00 CT at the Triton Invitational.
