OXFORD, Miss. - Auburn suffered its first sweep of the season Saturday as the Tigers dropped the second game of a doubleheader to Ole Miss 5-1 as Swayze Field.
The Tigers (19-14, 5-7 SEC) left 10 runners aboard - six in scoring position - and saw numerous scoring chances squandered on the night, while Ole Miss (25-8, 7-5) needed just one big inning to put Auburn away.
Senior LHP Michael O'Neal (2-3) once again got no run support in what looked to be a strong start. He was nothing short of spectacular through the first five innings, facing just one over the minimum and retiring the first 12 batters he faced. But he ran into big trouble in the sixth, giving up (three)hits and issuing (a pair) of walks as Ole Miss struck their first - and only - offensive blow of the night.
But the five-run sixth was all the Rebels would need. Nine men came to the plate, and a two-RBI double by Auston Bousfield and a two-RBI single from Sikes Orvis were the deciding blows. A fifth run scored on an RBI single from Brantley Bell to make it 5-0.
Trey Cochran-Gill kept the Rebels off the board the rest of the way, working 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Auburn avoided having its first back-to-back shutouts since 1982 with a single run in the seventh. The Tigers strung together three hits for the first time all day, plating their first run in 23 innings on an RBI single from Jordan Ebert that scored Damon Haecker, making it 5-1.
The eighth inning showed plenty of promise as three straight walks by two different Ole Miss relievers loaded the bases with no outs and brought the tying run to the plate. But the next three Auburn batters struck out, and the best scoring opportunity of the night was wasted.
Ryan Tella led the way with a 2-for-3 night. Ebert, Damek Tomscha, Haecker, Sam Gillikin and Anfernee Grier had the other hits for Auburn, who actually out-hit Ole Miss 7-6.
Auburn returns to action Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. home game against Troy at Plainsman Park.
