Auburn tied for third after first round of NCAA Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Auburn golf was tied for third with Alabama following a 6-under, 274, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Golf Championship at the par-70, 6,941-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club. Matt Gilchrest carded Auburn's low round, shooting a 3-under, 67, and was tied for ninth following the opening round.

Due to rain the top 15 seeded teams are playing their second round on Saturday while seeds 16-30 played a single round over the course of Friday and Saturday and will play their second round beginning at 7:20 a.m. CT on Sunday.

Will Starke of South Carolina was the individual leader, shooting a 6-under, 64. South Carolina was also the first round team leader at 8-under, 272.

Will Long and Niclas Carlsson each shot a 2-under, 68, to tie for 15th while Daniel Stringfellow and Jake Mondy were tied for 62nd after first round 71s (plus-1).

South Carolina was followed by Oklahoma in second at minus-7, 273. SMU (minus-5, 275) was fifth, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech were tied for sixth at minus-3 (277), Iowa State was eighth at minus-2 (278) and Washington, LSU, UCLA and California were tied for ninth at minus-1 (279).

The top eight teams after three rounds advance to match play, which begins Tuesday, while the top 40 individuals plus ties will play a single round on Monday to determine an individual champion.
