JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - Auburn rising senior Dan Stringfellow fired an even par 71 and is tied for 44th in the first round of stroke play in the 114th U.S. Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic Club's 7409-yard Highlands Course on Monday.

Starting on the back nine, the Roselle, Ill., native birdied the par-5 12th and par-4 14th while bogeying the par-4 16th and made the turn at 1-under. Stringfellow doubled No. 1 and bogeyed the second hole before recording two consecutive birdies on the par-3 fourth and par-5 fifth.

Stringfellow will tee off in Tuesday's second round at 7:25 am Central on the Atlanta Athletic Club's Riverside Course. Sam Horsfield of England shot a 6-under 66 and holds a one shot lead over Lee McCoy of Clarkesville, Ga.

A field of 312 players will play 18 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, after which the field will be cut to the low 64 scorers. Six rounds of match play begin on Wednesday and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Sunday.
