OHNS CREEK, Ga. - Auburn rising senior Dan Stringfellow advanced to the match play portion of the 114th U.S. Amateur after a 1-over 73 on the Atlanta Athletic Club's Riverside Course on Tuesday to finish tied for 43rd after 36-holes of stroke play at 1-over.
Stringfellow birdied the par-5 first hole but followed with a bogey on the second. After 12 straight pars, he bogeyed the 15th before closing the round with three-straight pars.
"Today was a little bit of a grind," said Stringfellow. "I putted well and made a lot of pars. I hung in there and made sure I didn't do anything too crazy. I wasn't as aggressive in the second round, but I didn't hit it as great today, but I pitched and putted well so it kind of leveled out.
"I am pretty excited, but I want to be focused and be ready for match play. I need to be more aggressive in match play and go for some pins. I will be focused and ready to play, and it will be a good day tomorrow."
The Roselle, Ill., native, who played a solid 36 holes, recording five birdies, four bogeys and a double, qualified for match play for the first time after playing in his first U.S. Amateur in 2012 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado.
The 312-player field was cut to the low 64 for six rounds of match play that will begin Wednesday until the 36-hole championship match on Sunday. For more information on the U.S. Amateur, please go to USGA.org.
