TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Auburn volleyball team pushed the No. 6 Florida State Seminoles to the limit Tuesday, but fell just short in a heartbreaker, 3-2 (17-25, 28-26, 25-17, 16-25, 8-15) at Tully Gymnasium.
The Tigers (5-5), who played in their third five-set match in the last four days, won two of the first three sets against the sixth-ranked Seminoles, but could not finish off Florida State (9-0) on its home floor.
"We got down a little bit early in the first game, but I thought we showed a lot of courage to fight back," head coach Rick Nold said. "We are going to have some inconsistencies, but I think overall we gave a great fight against a good team."
Courtney Crable and Stephanie Campbell tied for the team lead with 13 kills apiece. Macy Reece recorded nine kills, while Kristel Moor chipped in seven off the bench along with four blocks. Breanna Barksdale led the Tigers with five blocks and collected six kills.
Alexa Filley posted 41 assists and eight digs for the Tigers. The freshman now has 383 assists through 10 matches this year, a mark that already ranks as the 10th-most in a single season by an Auburn setter.
Alyssa Ivey finished with a team-high 17 digs, while Taylor Schill logged 10.
After Florida State took the first set, it was Auburn who jumped out to a fast start immediately in the second, claiming seven of the first nine points in the frame. The Tigers led through the majority of the set, but the Seminoles slowly chipped away at the lead. A pair of FSU attack errors extended the frame and Auburn capitalized getting two straight kills from Crable to win the set.
"We talked the whole time that we needed to focus on us. We had a game plan coming in, but we wanted to see how we would execute," Nold said. "The other thing is that we struggled to make the second adjustment, it's something that we'll have to learn, but I'm very proud of the effort."
The Tigers continued to ride the momentum in the third set, out-hitting FSU (.310-.-087). Auburn's blocking game was a major strength as the Tigers posted five blocks to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Florida State's attack found its rhythm in the last two sets, combining to hit .380 and posting 19 kills to tie the match and then eventually to claim the deciding set.
Auburn returns home this weekend to host the War Eagle Invitational to wrap up its non-conference slate.
The Tigers will take on Florida A&M on Friday at 7 p.m. to begin play before concluding the tournament on Saturday against Jacksonville State at noon and Northwestern State at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and all three matches will be broadcasted on SEC Network +.
