Auburn, Ala. - The No. 12 Auburn men's golf team begins play at the Primland Collegiate Invitational with 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday at the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Va.
The field includes No. 13 Virginia and No. 23 Virginia Tech along with Clemson, host Wake Forest, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and UNCW.
"It's only nine teams, but they're some of the best teams in the country," said head coach Nick Clinard. "We're looking forward to playing a different style of golf course, a mountain course. It's supposed to be a little cold and windy so it will be different than what we're used to."
Sophomore All-SEC Matt Gilchrest will be in the No. 1 spot after finishing tied for fourth at the Carpet Capital Collegiate Sept. 5-7 where the Tigers tied for third in the season opening tournament. Gilchrest is currently averaging a team-leading 69.67 stroke average and has carded two out of three rounds under par.
After finishing tied for 10th at the Carpet Capital, sophomore Ryan Benton will be in the No. 2 position. Benton and Gilchrest shared the low score with a 66 in the Carpet Capital second round. He holds the team's second lowest round average with a 70.67.
