Auburn completes first round at Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Auburn women's golf team shot a 10-over-par 298 in Friday's opening round and stand in a tie for 10th place at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational.

Freshman Sophia Schubert led the way for the Tigers with a 1-over-par 73. Junior Alex Harrell shot 74 (+2) and sophomore Clara Baena posted a 75 (+3). Freshman Kelli Murphy was Auburn's other counting round with a 76 (+4).

Saturday's second round gets underway shortly before 8 a.m. CT at the UNC Finley Golf Course. Pairings and live scoring are available at golfstatresults.com.

Schubert got off to a blistering start with birdies on four of her first six holes to move quickly to 4-under and briefly hold the tournament lead. She made the turn at 2-under after a double bogey-bogey-birdie finish. She would remain at 2-under through 17 but carded a triple-bogey at the last hole to finish over par for the day.

Harrell also started strong with two birdies and a bogey on the front, making the turn at 1-under. Standing 2-under after a birdie at 10, Harrell finished the day with two bogeys and a double-bogey on her final eight holes to card a 74. Baena opened with nine straight pars, then made birdie at the 10th to get to 1-under, but she would card two bogeys and a double on her final eight holes to record a 75.

Murphy bogeyed her first three holes of the day but rebounded to play the rest of the round at 1-over, recording a pair of birdies along with a bogey and a double. Senior Victoria Trapani posted an 8-over-par 80.

Top-ranked South Carolina leads the tournament at 1-under after shooting 287. Duke and Wake Forest are one shot back, tied for second at even par. Marissa Dodd (Wake), Augusta James (NC State) and Celine Boutier (Duke) share the individual lead at 4-under.
