Women's golf finishes 12th at Tar Heel Invitational

Sophia Schubert tied for 21st for Auburn's best individual finish at the Tar Heel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Auburn's women's golf team earned a 12th-place finish at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, shooting a 303 (+15) in Sunday's final round at the UNC Finley Golf Course.

The Tigers finished at 900 (+36) for the tournament, missing a top-10 finish for the first time this season. Tough conditions with rain throughout the day Sunday led to high scores throughout the field with no teams breaking par on the day.

"We just did not get it done this week," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "We have a lot of work to do before the next event and during the offseason to be where we want to be."

Freshman Sophia Schubert led the Auburn effort for the week, finishing at 5-over-par 221 to tie for 21st. She was even par through her first 14 holes Sunday but bogeyed three of the last four to finish with a 75. Junior Alex Harrell had the Tigers' best round Sunday with a 74 (+2), carding 16 pars with just two bogeys for one of Auburn's steadiest rounds of the week.

Senior Victoria Trapani had her best round of the week with a closing 76 (+4) on Sunday. Freshman Kelli Murphy shot 78 (+6) and sophomore Clara Baena closed with a 79 (+7) to round out the Auburn lineup.

Duke claimed the team title at 2-under-par 862, holding off top-ranked South Carolina by two shots. NC State was third at 14-over. Individually, Virginia's Lauren Diaz-Yi earned medalist honors at 7-under with Vanderbilt's Kendall Martindale finishing four shots back as the runner-up.

Teams completed the last few holes of the second round and the entire third round Sunday after play was suspended by inclement weather late Saturday afternoon.

Auburn will close out the fall season Oct. 26-28 at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament will take place at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, which will be an NCAA Regional site in the spring.
