No. 8 Auburn men's golf closes fall season at US Collegiate

AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 8 Auburn men's golf team concludes the fall portion of its schedule this weekend in the US Collegiate at the Golf Club of Georgia Lake Side Course in Alpharetta, Ga., Friday through Sunday.

"It's probably the best tournament nationwide," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We'll face 11 of the top 30 teams in the country so we are going to find out how good we are pretty quickly."

Sophomore Matt Gilchrest will play in the No. 1 slot for the Tigers followed by junior Michael Johnson, senior Dan Stringfellow, freshman Matthew Perrine and sophomore Will Long. In the three previous tournaments, Auburn was the runner-up at the Primland Collegiate Invitational and the Sagamore Fall Preview this past Tuesday as well as a tie for third at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.

Gilchrest leads the Tigers with a 69.50 stroke average along with Johnson (71.00) and Stringfellow (72.25). Gilchrest has finished second, third and fourth overall in Auburn's previous three tournaments while Stringfellow tied for second at the Sagamore. Johnson was the runner-up at the Primland with his Auburn record breaking 16-under 200.

The US Collegiate field includes No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 LSU, No. 9 Wake Forest, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 17 Texas, No. 23 Washington, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Virginia, Clemson, Kent State, Iowa and East Tennessee State.
