No. 8 Auburn men's golf tied for 5th after US Collegiate 2nd round

ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The No. 8 Auburn men's golf team gained four shots on the lead and stays in a tie for 5th at 1-under 286-289-575 with No. 11 LSU after the US Collegiate second round at the Golf Club of Georgia Lake Side Course on Saturday.

Sophomore Will Long, who is tied for 11th with a 3-under 73-141, made the turn at 3-under for the day and 7-under for the tournament but had a pair of bogeys along with a double on the back. Sophomore Matt Gilchrest, who is a shot behind Long in a tie for 15th at 2-under 69-142, was 5-under on the day after making birdie at No. 14 but doubled the par-3 17th.

Senior Dan Stringfellow is tied for 30th at 74-145 while junior Michael Johnson is tied for 42nd at 73-147 and freshman Matthew Perrine tied for 63rd at 76-151. All five Tigers were a combined 8-under after the first two holes while the team turned at 6-under.

"We got off to a great start and played really well on the front nine," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We were in position to have a very strong round. We gained four shots on Virginia and are still in the hunt and need to play a complete final round."

No. 25 Virginia, which fired a first round 16-under 272, lost its six shot and is tied with No. 9 Texas (287-565) after a 293-565 in a loaded field that features 10 of the 15 teams ranked in the Top 25. Texas A&M is third at 288-569 followed by No. 13 Wake Forest (284-572), No. 8 Auburn and No. 11 LSU (279-575), which jumped eight spots after an opening 296. No. 6 Stanford (293-576) and Oklahoma State (286-576) are tied for seventh while No. 24 East Tennessee State (292-578) is in ninth.

No. 20 Washington (290-580) and Iowa (289-580) are tied for 10th followed by No. 5 UCLA (294-581), No. 15 Georgia Tech (285-581), Clemson (291-585) and Kent State (297-601). Virginia's Denny McCarthy continues to be the individual leader at 11-under 133 after a 2-under 70.
