SAN ANTONIO - Led by freshman Sophia Schubert's 65 (-7), the Auburn women's golf team shot the second-best team round in program history Sunday to share the first-round lead after 18 holes at the Alamo Invitational.

Auburn posted a score of 275 (-13) in Sunday's opening round, the best single-round score by an Auburn team since 2004 and the second-best in program history. A 271 at the 2004 ACC-SEC Challenge ranks as the only better single-day score by an Auburn women's team. Arkansas matched the Tigers' effort and the teams are tied heading into Monday's second round.

"Today was a very good day," Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. "We saw lots of improvement. Sophia, Clara Baena and Kelli Murphy had really big rounds for us today, and Victoria Trapani was steady as well. We still have a lot more to take care of."

Schubert, who leads the individual tournament after 18 holes, also put her name in the Auburn record books with a 7-under-par 65. It was the first 65 in program history and the second-best single-round score ever by a Tiger women's golfer. The only better 18-hole round at Auburn belongs to Diana Ramage, who shot a 64 at the 2004 ACC-SEC Challenge.

"I'm really proud of her and how young our team is," Evans said. "Sophia is a great talent and fun to coach."

Schubert was bogey-free on the day, posting five birdies and an eagle to grab the 18-hole lead. She made the turn at 4-under after birdies at the third, fourth, sixth and ninth, then quickly got to 6-under after an eagle at the 10th. Another birdie at 13 followed by five straight pars closed out a round for the record books.

Two other Auburn players posted rounds in the 60s. Sophomore Clara Baena is in third place through 18 holes after carding a 4-under-par 68. Baena turned at 2-under with birdies at the third and seventh. Her only blemish came with a bogey at the 10th, but she closed with five pars and three birdies for her sixth round at par or better this season.

Freshman Kelli Murphy recorded her best round as a Tiger with a 69 (-3) to give Auburn three players in the top 10 after one round. Like Schubert, she played a bogey-free round, recording birdies at the fourth, seventh and 14th holes.

Senior Victoria Trapani shot 73 (+1) for her best round of the season so far, and junior Alex Harrell recorded a 76 (+3).

The Tigers will be paired with Arkansas and LSU for Monday's second round. Those teams will get underway at 9:50 a.m. off the first tee. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
