AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn sophomore golfer Matt Gilchrest is ranked 13th overall in the fall rankings for the Palmer Cup, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday. Gilchrest is one of six SEC players ranked in the top 15 of the first edition of rankings.
Gilchrest is averaging a team-low 70.00 strokes per round and has seven of 11 sub-par rounds, including six in the 60s. The Southlake, Texas, native had his third consecutive top four finish to open the season by tying for second with teammate Dan Stringfellow at the Sagamore Fall Preview. He tied for third at the Primland Collegiate Invitational at 11-under and tied for fourth at 7-under in the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Gilchrist is ranked 10th individually in the most Golfweek recent poll, while the Tigers are ranked eighth.
In this spring's final ranking, the top six golfers from the United States and from Europe will be among 10 other individuals chosen to compete in the Palmer Cup at Rich Harvest Farms June 12-14.
Using Golfstat's NCAA player ranking as a base, the Palmer Cup ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a negative bonus for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The Tigers return to action to open the spring season at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii, Feb. 5-7. For the most up to date information, follow us on Twitter @AUMensGolf or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AUMensGolf.
