ATLANTA - Auburn's divers completed a successful first day at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Thursday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Junior Justin Youtsey was Auburn's top-finisher in the 1-meter final, taking fourth overall with a score of 332.75. Freshman Pete Turnham also advanced to the 10-diver final, taking sixth place with a 329.00. The freshman's score was his season-best on the 1-meter and gave him an NCAA Zones qualifying score.
"On the men's side, we were pretty steady," diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "I thought Justin did a good job, but he just needs to be sharper on his entries which is something we'll continue to work on. The diver of the day was Pete [Turnham], turning in a personal best on the 1-meter. I think he has continued to get better as the season has gone on. Cinzia [Calabretta] was consistent for us, but we've got to keep getting sharper and this week will give us that opportunity."
Cinzia Calabretta was Auburn's top-finisher in the women's 3-meter competition. The senior posted a score of 279.90 to take ninth overall, bettering her prelim score of 275.60. Carly Scheper just missed the 10-diver final, taking 12th overall with a six-dive list of 270.95. Shanna Schuelein posted a score of 253.55 to take 16th place.
The women will dive on the 1-meter springboard Friday while the men will take to the 3-meter on the second day of action at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. CT.
