Auburn, Ala. - Auburn senior Lukas Ollert faced the No. 1 seed -- Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer - Thursday in the opening round of the USTA/ITA national indoor championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Stiefelmeyer captured the tough-fought victory, 6-4, 6-3, but Ollert played well against the nation's top seed.
"Lukas played well and had his chances in the first set, but didn't execute when the opportunity was there. He was up a break, but rushed a little bit, and lost the first set," said Auburn assistant coach Martin Stiegwardt.
"In the second set, he had his chances again, but Stiefelmeyer came up with big shots in important points. That's why he's ranked No. 1 in the country.
"Lukas played well overall. Tomorrow, he will reset and focus on his consolation match."
Pairings for the consolation bracket will be announced later tonight.
Ollert qualified for the tournament by winning the USTA/ITA Southern Regional in Auburn, defeating teammate Maxime Hinnisdaels in the finals.
