AUBURN, Ala. - Stephanie Campbell and Emily Klitzke posted 14 kills apiece and Auburn volleyball got a strong defensive effort to top Tennessee, 3-1, (26-28, 25-14, 25-22, 25-15) on Sunday at Auburn Arena.
The win marked Auburn's (11-14, 3-9 SEC) third-straight victory over Tennessee (8-19, 1-12 SEC) as the Tigers finished with 16 blocks and 81 digs, a team-high for a four-set match this season. Sunday's match also marked the first time this season that Auburn rallied back to win a match after dropping the opening set.
"We got down at the beginning of the first set, but we battled back. To me it was a matter of also battling back and focusing on how we wanted to play," head coach Rick Nold said. "I thought we were tentative in the first set, but I felt like we were more aggressive as the match went on. We made some adjustments and then really started to put pressure on Tennessee with our offense."
Campbell made an impact in Auburn's attack as well its blocking effort, tying for a team-high with eight blocks with Breanna Barkdale. Campbell also recorded double-digit kills for the fifth in the last six matches.
Klitzke was consistent for the Tigers on the right side throughout the match to finish with double-digit kills for the third time in last four contests. The sophomore also added in six blocks in the four-set win.
Alyssa Ivey and Taylor Schill tied for a team-high 18 digs in the match. Ivey's performance against the Lady Vols moved the junior up to seventh in Auburn single-season history with 340 digs in 2014.
Alexa Filley collected her 14th double-double season and her fifth in a row, posting a match-high 48 assists along with 11 digs. The freshman now has 948 assists this season and is just 48 shy of passing former Tiger Sara Shanks for the most in school history.
Auburn dominated every statistical category, putting down 59 kills compared to Tennessee's 45, hitting .191 to the Lady Vol's .098. The Tigers also out-digged Tennessee, 81-65 and finished with 16 blocks to the Lady Vols' 11.
The Tigers battled back but fell short in claiming the first set against Tennessee. Auburn used its momentum from the opening stanza to jump out to a quick start in the second set and hit .357 in the frame to tie the match at 1-1.
From there, Auburn's blocking effort would take over and Tennessee out of system for most of the match as the Tigers finished with 11 stuffs over the final two sets.
Auburn's service game continued to give Tennessee problems throughout the match as the Tigers finished with six aces in the win. Mary Hannah Arrington and Kelly Stewart collected two in the match, while Courtney Crable and Campbell added one service ace apiece, respectively.
Auburn faces a quick turnaround as the Tigers head to Gainesville, Fla., for a Wednesday match against No. 7 Florida. The match will be televised on the SEC Network and first serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
