Fraser McKean scored 336.90 to claim the 1-meter title at the LSU Diving Invitational
BATON ROUGE, La. - Auburn senior Fraser McKean picked up his second win of the season on the 1-meter springboard to lead the Tigers' divers on the opening day of action at the LSU Diving Invitational.
McKean posted a score of 336.90 to win the eight-diver final by over 17 points. The senior nearly broke a pool record at the LSU Natatorium in Monday's prelims, scoring 383.15 to earn the top seed in the 1-meter final. Freshman Pete Turnham continued to show improvement, collecting a third-place finish with a six-dive list of 312.70.
"For the men it was a learning experience. I thought Fraser and Pete competed hard," diving coach Jeff Shaffer said. "This meet gives you the chance to go out and redeem yourself if you have an average list in the morning. Even though Fraser wasn't as sharp this afternoon, it gave him a chance to go out and hit his last dive to win the final. Pete continues to get better and I'm excited to see his list on the 3-meter."
Cinzia Calabretta led the Auburn women with a second-place finish, recording a 286.10 in Monday's 3-meter final. The senior nearly won the morning prelim session, finishing second overall by just 1.15 points, posting a score of 291.55. Freshman Madeline Cox scored a 259.25 to place fourth overall.
"We've got to be a little more explosive in some of our dives on the women's side," Shaffer said. "It was a much better day for us performance-wise. I thought we were better than our last time out at Georgia and I think we'll continue to get better. Tomorrow provides us another chance to compete in a good competition and we're looking forward to it."
Tuesday's action at the LSU Natatorium begins at 11 a.m. The men will begin the day with prelims on the 3-meter springboard, while the women will take to the 1-meter. Live scoring can be found on DiveMeets.com.
