ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - For the third straight season, Auburn head golf coach Nick Clinard has guided his team to a top-three finish at the SEC Men's Golf Championships. This season it was a second-straight third-place finish for No. 26 Auburn, which shot 274-281-274--829 to finish 11-under.
"It was a fun day in the final pairing and the course was scoreable early," Clinard said. "We played well but just didn't make enough putts today. It was a very solid week and I'm proud of my team. We've had an outstanding spring season and are looking forward to NCAAs."
Niclas Carlsson was Auburn's top-scorer, finishing in a four-way tie for fifth at 5-under. Carlsson carded three rounds in the 60s, shooting 67-69-69--205 to finish 5-under.
Matt Gilchrest, playing in his first SEC Championship, finished in a six-way tie for 13th at 2-under. Gilchrest shot 68-72-68--208).
Will Long, also playing in his first conference championship, finished tied for 19th with one other at 1-under after he shot 69-70-70--209.
Jake Mondy tied for 32nd at plus-2, shooting 70-70-72--212 while Daniel Stringfellow tied for 56th at plus-9 after a final-round 67 (75-77-67--219).
Top-ranked Alabama (272-266-268--806) won the tournament at 34-under, No. 22 LSU (284-275-263--822) was second at 18-under, No. 6 Georgia (277-284-272--833) was fourth at 7-under and No. 24 South Carolina (277-278-283--838) rounded out the top-five at 2-under.
Alabama's Bobby Wyatt won the individual title at 18-under (65-61-66--192).
Auburn placed third in 2013 and second in 2012.
Auburn is one of four host spots for the NCAA Regionals, which begin May 15. Auburn's regional will be played at the Auburn University Club. Selections for the regionals will be announced live on May 5 from 9-10 a.m. CT during Morning Drive, Golf Channel's daily morning news and lifestyle show.
