AUBURN, Ala. - The 35th-ranked Auburn men's tennis team won its second home doubleheader of the season after defeating Mercer 6-1 and 6-1 on Saturday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
"I think our doubles were stronger than our singles. We have to get more consistent. That is why you play these matches," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "We have a tough one Friday and we have to get better. We have to be ready for a short week, so we will regroup and try to get better."
Marko Krickovic and Dante Saleh crusied in their first doubles match of the day, defeating Mercer's Arnav and Arsav Mohanty 6-0. Petar Tomic and Oliver Plaskett clinched the doubles point for Auburn, winning their match 7-5 over Austin Emmet and Anderson Scarpa.
96th-ranked Maxime Hinnisdaels only dropped two games in his first singles match, defeating Sam Philp 6-1, 6-1, while 110th-ranked Marko Krickovic only dropped one game, topping Anderson Scarpa 6-1, 6-0. Joseph Van Dooren also played a strong match, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Manuel De Luis. Dante Saleh also added a strong performance, beating Arnav Mohanty 6-0, 6-4, while Oliver Plaskett defeated Ruben Vanoppen 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
In the second match, doubles tandem Joseph Van Dooren and Maxime Hinnisdaels defeated the Mohanty brothers 6-2. Oliver Plaskett and Viboosh Chandrasekar then won their match 6-4 over Sam Philp and Anderson Scarpa to clinch the doubles point.
Van Dooren continued his strong singles play in the afternoon, defeating Scarpa 6-3, 6-1. Hinnisdaels also had a strong afternoon, topping Mercer's Arnav Mohanty 6-1, 6-3. Dante Saleh finished his afternnon in similar fashion, beating Arsav Mohanty 6-1, 6-4. Oliver Plaskett won his match 6-4, 6-4 over Manuel de Luis.
Marko Krickovic had to overcome two tiebreakers to defeat Sam Philp 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 1-0 (10-7).
Auburn's next match will be Friday at home against UAB. Matches will be at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center and admission is free.
