Women's golf 10th after one round in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The Auburn women's golf team posted a score of 302 (+14) in the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and stands in 10th place after 18 holes of play.

Freshman Kelli Murphy led Auburn on the day with a 2-over-par 74. Starting on hole 8, she opened with two birdies and two bogeys, then finished the back nine at plus-2 after bogeys at 14 and 16. Two more bogeys on the front side got her as high as 4-over, but she would birdie two of her final four holes to post a 74 and tie for 20th place through one round.

Fellow freshman Sophia Schubert birdied her first hole of the day, the par-4 fifth, but would not find another over the next 17 holes. Four bogeys along with the opening birdie gave her a first-round 75 (+3), placing her in a tie for 28th. Junior Alex Harrell shot 76 (+4) with three birdies and is tied for 38th entering the second round.

Victoria Trapani shot 77 (+5) and Jamie Yun carded an 80 (+8) to round out the starting five. Freshman Michaela Owen, playing as an individual, posted an opening 78 (+6) to move into a tie for 51st.

Arkansas leads the team standings after one round with a 2-over-par 290. Kent State is one shot back at 3-over, and TCU and Iowa State are tied for third at 5-over. Individually, Iowa State's Chonlada Chayanun led the way Sunday with a first-round 66 (-6). Arkansas' Gaby Lopez is three shots back in second place after an opening 69 (-3).

Round two of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic gets underway at 8 a.m. AST (6 a.m. CT) with a shotgun start. Auburn is paired with Indiana, Georgia and GRU Augusta for the second round. Live scoring is available via birdiefire.com.
